It seems like everyone who is new to Scrabble, has trouble knowing there 2-3 letter words, so they lose a lot of opportunities and challenges. One major reason for this is that the don't know how to study them, or they simply can't remember them. So I listed some "paths" that I've tried and heard and told a little about them. While Reading this remember to study the twos first, it will help you learn a lot of the threes quicker.
1) A good way to start is to see what you know! You can always write alphabetically what you think you know and look over the list, and see what you missed say them, sing them, chant them, whatever it takes to memorize them, and make a list it again. This is kind of boring, but seems to be the fastest way to learn for a lot of people. You will probably be amazed how many you know and how fast this number will go up. Some words may take more than 3-4 tries, especially the 3 letter words, so don't give up!
2) Take the list head on! Grab three different colored highlighters and highlight the words you know the darkest, the ones you know, but hardly, and probably won't find it when you need highlight the middle colored highligher, then highlight the ones you didn't know at all, or forgot completely the lightest color. Open a word processor type all the words by catagory. study the catagories you needed to learn the most to least in order, then if you want to move it simply go back and change it in the processor or highlight it the color you want to change it to, this way you don't have to judge it into only a know or don't know catagory.
3) Read it by letter! This method is expecially helpful with twos. Say a random letter in the alphabet and write out all the words of the length you are working, on the paper that start with that letter in the alphabet you said before. Then look at what you missed or added and try again. This method is helpful because you can take it by part and then remember in a game letters that go after a letter easier, but even if you know them this way you probably don't well enough to retain for a long time, so you should then add letters so you groups of letters you have to figure out. Another plus about this method is that there are many variations, you can do the last letter if you are trying to learn words a little differently for the game (it might be hard to find a list like that). You can use a timer to see how fast you can do each letter or even give yourself a limit each letter counts, this would help under time pressure in a tournament or club games.
4) This is not a method, but remember what Mike Baron, studies showed? 5% of the dictionary is 2-4 letter words, 75% of words played are 2-4 letters, and 50% of points earned (this all sounds crazy, but it all true) come from those short 2-4 letter words. So it WILL always help to learn more short words matter which ones they are! (Yes, even ZZZ!)

One that I use effectively is to highlight 3 letter words Yellow if letters 12 and letters 23 both make acceptable 2 letter words. If only 12 or 23 make an acceptable 2 letter word I highlight the two letters that are a word green. Non highlighted words (240) do not contain an acceptable two letter word. I use underlines and double underlines for the words I do not know well or at all. This layout allows me to have several learning methods in a single document. |
