Another player's observations; mileage may vary...
1) I've been studying sixes more lately too, and I agree with Ben that
it pays off. If not every game, then maybe every other game. Also,
it's cross-training for hooks on fives, and even better still, most
sixes have inflected forms that are bingos. I've definitely added to
my stock of medium-prob sevens this way.
2) I find that, hierarchies of importance aside, I need a study
approach that feels more like fun and less like work, or else I'll get
burned out and my practice sessions get sloppy. (I spend about 10-15
hours a week studying, on average) So I vary my study diet constantly,
weighting it toward what I know I need but making time for exploring
deeper into the word forest also. I usually have four or five study
initiatives going at once, and mini-puzzles within those. I like to
feel relaxed and pressure-free when I study, and the variety helps me
do that.
Compared to a more systematic approach, this has disadvantages; I find
myself occasionally forgetting a word or hook over the board that I
obviously should know. The "flashy play followed by horse**** play"
syndrome. But the advantages are that it motivates me to study/read
more, because I'm having more fun, and it occasionally pays off with
an oddball medium-to-low prob bingo (and pays double when my opponents
challenge). Besides, I figure, I've been studying for two years - by
the four or five-year mark, I should have those iffy areas spackled
over much better, while having walked the entire forest at least a
couple of times. As long as I keep studying, I'll get to everything
eventually.
3) One thing I vow to do even more of: work with blank(s). Not so much
in the sense of "find all the gazillion bingos in SATINE?", but
working with oddball racks like AEFIUT? (which I had to open in a
recent game, spent 5 minutes looking for it and missed it. Gah!),
training the brain to cycle both quickly and accurately through the
alphabet. Anamonics can help, and I know a few (very few), but I'm
more looking to address blank racks not covered by the top 500 or so
anamonics.
