WSC Plans Proceed for America
The head of the New York-based National Scrabble Association assures that he is in the process of seeing that the eighth World Scrabble Championship would be held in North America next year. NSA executive director John D. Williams II was "disappointed" when he read the Bahrain Gulf Daily News account last month that the World English-language Scrabble Players Association had suggested Bahrain be considered the WSC venue if game copyright owner Hasbro is disinterested in sponsorship.
Bahrain Scrabble Committee president Roy Kietzman told John that Bahrain is considered a last resort should Hasbro be unwilling to sponsor the WSC. "I think what all this indicates is that players definitely want a WSC," Roy said. "If, for some reason, it can't be held in one place or another, players would like to know that there's an alternative.
"I'd hope that no one would be disappointed [by the account in June in the press] but would be more determined than ever to proceed with the WSC in North America." Defining the difference between the NSA and Hasbro, John underscored, "I merely wanted all players to know that the association - though not necessarily Hasbro - is and always has been for the world championship.
"It's important for the Scrabble world to know that the NSA and Hasbro aren't the same." After reservations about the 2003 WSC in Malaysia, Hasbro withdrew its funding last year, putting into question whether the company would sponsor the 2005 event.
According to an established formula, next year's global event should take place in America. "I should know in the next few months," John remarked, "if we'll host WSC 2005 in North America."

Reactions on WSC Bahrain Site
From London to Dubai, Scrabble players have reacted to last week's Gulf Daily News website report on Bahrain being mooted as next year's eighth World Scrabble Championship venue.
Philip Nelkon, London-based international Scrabble co-ordinator, commenting on the GDN aticle, said he felt it was too early to make such considerations. Mangala Bhandarkar, founding member of the 20-year-old Bahrain Scrabble League and who is now based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, noticed the article on the GDN website and said others in the Gulf would certainly be ready to provide logistical support if the WSC were to be in Bahrain.
Bahrain Scrabble Committee president Roy Kietzman underscored that such an idea was purely speculative at this point but pointed up the interest of players in wanting the WSC. "North America is the logical option, of course, but if Hasbro seems disinterested in hosting the event, other alternatives are available."
