BTW, I have found that cramming before tournaments is
counterproductive....
...IMO, the best prep is to relax for a day or two before the start,
altho
you may want to anagram for a little while (and/or play a practice
game)
*just before* Game One. But don't listen to me as I generally play
the
worst on Day 1, even discounting that as a lower seed in Expert
Division
at Swiss tournaments, my strongest competition is likely to be in
the
earliest games. I do find that if I play on two consecutive
weekends,
my early games in week two are better than my early games in
week one.
The first tournament prepares me for the second...

(User Info | Send a Message) http://www.absp.org.uk | The advice not to cram is something that I read everywhere, but I do think it is important to realise that everyone works differently.
Although I certainly wouldn't advocate burning the candle at both ends the night before an event, I know that I do feel a lot more confident if I have worked especially hard in the week leading up to a rated event. Confidence plays a large part in success, both in ability to find words and in maintaining equanimity, and your ability to play well, in the face of the luck just not going your way.
All I'm saying is that if you have a tournament in five days time and you know you could do with working on your such-and-such words, don't shy away from doing that important work just because you have been told not to 'cram'. There is nothing worse than sitting there during the first game of a long tournament feeling totally under-prepared for what lies ahead. |

(User Info | Send a Message) | My advice to me as a tournament date approaches would be to study whatever I'm working on at the time until 1-2 weeks prior to the event. Then I should review and refresh words that I already "know", just to make sure that I DO know them.
I "know" all the fours, yet I nearly challenged KOBO in New Orleans!

You can do that even during a game. Trying to memorize hooks that your opponent opened up, even. Its good fun to think while playing. |
