After Mavenizing my games, I tried to classify my errors into several categories, which I then combined into 7 broad categories which roughly correspond to various strengths in playing Scrabble.
The categories I came up with were as follows (ranked in what I feel is the order of importance, not the order of error frequency):
1) Word Knowledge - I still see this as the #1 factor in success. At higher levels, other things become more important, but you can't get to those levels without word knowledge. In addition to finding the words to play, this also includes knowing when to challenge, knowing hooks (especially s hooks and which words don't take an s) etc.
2) Board Vision - the ability to find plays on the board, notice hot spots etc. After you have achieved a good minimal level of word knowledge (2s-5s, JQXZ and 4-vowel sixes, about the top 5,000-7,500 probability 7s and top 5,000-7,500 probability 8s, vowel dumps) I would imagine that most of the plays the improving player "misses" are words they know in spots they didn't see rather than words they didn't know (though the latter may cost more points per error). Being able to zero in on the hot spots on the board seems to be important (and this includes non-obvious hot spots - i.e. ones that may not involve a TWS but instead involve multiple overlaps) 3) Word Finding - knowing words and finding them are two different things. Sometimes you see the spot to play a word but don't find the word to play there. Annagramming abilty is the major component here, but not the only one.
4) Rack Management - balancing score vs. leave. Knowing when to exchange, Q-management etc.
5) Board Management - most players have a basic knowledge of how to open or close the board but this relates more to timing. There are some obvious situations when even the rankest beginner knows to close the board (i.e. you are way ahead) but even early in the game it is important to be able to open or close the board when it stands to benefit you and not your opponent (i.e. when they are less likely to have a bingo-prone rack). Other skills here involve keeping the board amenable to bingos (so that you don't spend time building a bingo rack only to find you have no place to play it) etc.
6) End Game Play - This can be absolutely crucial since an improper sequence of end game moves will often result in a 30+ point swing in score but I didn't rank it as high as the other areas because you have to be able to get to the end game in good position to win before you worry about how to play the end game.
7) Defensinve play - blocking hot spots, not opening triple word spaces, being aware that the X is still out etc.
In addition to the above, there are a few other areas I could have listed but I feel they are pretty minor. Among them are: - time management - mechanics (tracking, score-keeping, knowing the rules etc.) - knowledge of opponent (so you know when to challenge, play phonies etc)
